The Metropolitan Opera announced today that Fabio Luisi has been appointed to the post of Principal Guest Conductor. He is the first conductor to hold the post since Valery Gergiev, who had the job for a decade, ending in 2008.According to a report in today's New York Times, Mr. Luisi has signed a three-year contract. He will appear at the Met for two to three months of the season. In the 2010-2011 season, he is scheduled to conduct revivals of Rigoletto and Ariadne auf Naxos.
The move should do much to shore up the musical and artistic side of the opera house, which has suffered recently along with its oft-injured Music Direcor, James Levine.
